Join us in turning 10,000 misprinted whistles from anti-ICE efforts into big art celebrating resistance, solidarity, and community.
Last winter, people across the US 3D-printed, distributed, and blew whistles to protect neighbors against wrongful ICE detainment, violence, and disappearance. The Whistle Project, which facilitated the printing and distribution of whistles, has collected 10,000 misprinted whistles from these efforts.
We're turning these misprinted whistles into Whistle Fish, a large-scale visualization of resistance, solidarity, and community organizing. We welcome anyone who’d like to join us to come make a fish out of whistles and share their stories of resistance.
This effort is being led by Daisy, Ariel, and Jeff, Minnesota artists who like making art that’s big, weird, and fun. Like many in the Twin Cities, we “neighbored” during ICE’s Operation Metro Surge, and this project is grounded in witnessing the power and joy of that collective action. We’re looking forward to having more artists, makers, and community members get involved in this work too.
Do you know where this work should live, have studio space, or want to get involved?
(See below for more info)
Home(s) for this artwork: Do you know a venue or institution interested in displaying or finding a home for this work? We’re especially interested in locations with a connection to community organizing, resistance, and remembrance. The space will need to be able to accommodate minimum dimensions of 12ft wide and 8ft tall. We’d love for the space to accommodate stations for visitors to make whistle fish to add to the piece.
Studio space: We are looking for free or low-cost studio space that can accommodate large-scale making.
Partners: Do you have work aligned with resistance and community organizing that could be supported by this work, a community you’d like to be connected, or ideas on how it can be more impactful? We’d love to hear from you.
Materials: Do you have misprinted whistles, wire, a hot glue gun you don’t use, or other materials that could become fish? We’ll gladly take them (storage capacity permitting)!
Funding: We’d love help paying for studio space and materials.
Making whistle fish: This is the most fun part and you should join us for it!!! Let us know you’re interested and we’ll let you know as soon as we have a studio space for community making - or if you’re itching to get started on something on your own, that’s great too! We can share our current vision and whistles with you. :)
